Ground Penetrating Radar Used to Locate and Confirm Post Tension Cable

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, LLC., serving the entire state of Arizona and nationwide, was contacted by a major contractor to conduct an investigation in Tucson, Arizona. This tenant improvement project required several proposed core-drilling locations to be drilled through an elevated concrete slab. This slab was known to have several post tension cables (PT) as well as rebar. Adding to this, were several concrete beams. The project general contractor required that these structural members not be interfered with or damaged in any way, requiring that all be identified below the surface. Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, was required to immediately respond to the urgent nature of the job in order to prevent the project from any delays.

Post tension cable (PT cable) is typically tightened to 20,000 to 40,000 pounds per square inch when it lies beneath the concrete slab surface. It provides incredible strength and structural integrity to the slab. For that reason, it is imperative that all cables be located as well as any beams or other reinforcement in order to preserve the structural integrity of the building before any concrete cutting or concrete coring is begun. A broken and snapped cable can be quite dramatic causing great and expensive property damage, not to mention risk of injury of loss of life. GPRS was able to completely identify and locate each cable, reinforcement, and beam, giving the general contractor the critical information needed to move the drain while saying clear from each cable.

With GPR, there is no wait for developing film as with traditional x-ray. Many times, only one side of the slab is needed for scanning, thus time and resources are efficiently save and ideal for tight project schedules or unforeseen emergencies. Ground Penetrating Radar is the new way to "x-ray"! Ground Penetrating Radar was ideal on this site as it was a facility that had ongoing construction in progress with many people on site working. GPR does not require evacuation of the area as does traditional "x-ray" concrete imaging. GPR emits no radiation and is completely safe to be near. Traditional "x-ray" is mostly done after hours whereas GPR can be done during normal business hours. All data findings are marked directly on the surface at the customer’s request for the easiest interpretation of the scanning provided.
