Ground Penetrating Radar Used to Locate Post Tension Cable at Large Commercial Renovation

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, LLC. - GPRS - of Arizona was contacted by a local contractor to locate all post tension cable, rebar, and conduit in the concrete slabs on multiple floors in a large commercial renovation project in Phoenix, AZ. The project required core-drilling several large holes ranging from 3" to 8" in diameter into the concrete slab. It was critical to avoid hitting any post tension cable, reinforcements, or utilities.

The local contractor had previously contracted another local GPR / locating company for this job. Unfortunately, their locating process was substandard and during the first drill operation, a post tension cable was hit due to this cable being completely missed by the locating company (see picture of hole below). Once this took place, it was clear that it was far too dangerous for the contractor to proceed without having another GPR company to re-scan the area more efficiently.

Ground Penetrating Radar System, LLC. of Arizona was contacted to complete this job. Not only was it essential to locate post tension cable, rebar, and utilities such as live power and communication lines in the concrete slab – it was vital to deliver results right away. Not only was the contractor behind schedule, but any damage done by hitting anything in the slab would cause even greater loses of time and money.

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, LLC. is very familiar with high volume and time-sensitive projects. GPRS was able to completely scan all needed areas for all locations before the contractor's deadline. Ground Penetrating Radar Systems arrived on site and used both ground penetrating radar to locate all post tension cable, rebar, and conduit in the concrete slabs. GPRS also used radio detection / signal induction technologies to assist in locating all conduit within the slab. This enabled the general contractor to safely and in a timely manner, know where to core drill into the concrete while eliminating costly repairs by avoiding breakages of any concrete rebar or conduit lines.

Ground Penetrating Radar mapping is a great tool to scan areas of post tension cables, rebar, and conduits, including PVC pipes. Ground penetrating radar can also be used to locate underground utilities such as water, gas, electrical, communication, sewer, and other objects prior to digging or excavating.
