Utility Locate Prior to Monitoring Well Install

Monitoring wells are needed on a regular basis in order to test soil conditions below the surface. They can be necessary when selling property, when a hazardous material spill occurs, or for a number of different reasons. When installing or removing monitoring wells, it is important to know what utilities might be in the area. No matter what project is happening where digging is necessary, there are ways to keep yourself and your crew safer using underground utility location.

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems (GPRS) was called recently to conduct underground utility locating around proposed monitoring wells that were to be removed near Phoenix, Arizona. Because these wells were installed by another company, the company that hired GPRS, made the wise decision to have underground utility locating done prior to digging.

GPRS was able to identify utilities in the area where the digging was planned to occur. A 400 mHz antenna with the ground penetrating radar was used by GPRS to scan the areas as well as a Radio Detection wand which picks up most underground utilities with a current running through them. All of the findings were clearly marked on the surface with spray paint and discussed with the customer. GPRS is a private utiity locator. That means that GPRS can locate utilities where traditional “811” or Blue Stake serices cannot go. 811 or Bluestake will only conduct underground utility locating on the public side of the respective utility’s meter and no futher. GPRS can locate any and all utilties, whatever the need, wherever the location.

Prior to digging, saw cutting, core drilling, excavating or boring in Arizona, be safe and get as many questions answered as to what sub-surface obstructions are present. This can include reinforcement or utilities within concrete or underground utilities.
